Pendant Necklace Length Guide: Which Length for Which Neckline

· 2 min read

A pendant looks right or wrong mostly because of where it lands. Two centimetres decide whether it sits in the hollow of the collarbone or disappears into a neckline.

Here is where each length falls, which one suits which neckline, and how to use the extension chain most necklaces come with.

Pendant Necklace Length Guide: Which Length for Which Neckline

Where each length falls

These are averages: on a wider neck or shoulders a chain sits a little higher, on a slimmer one a little lower. The pendant itself adds its own height below the chain.

Which length for which neckline

  • Crew neck or T-shirt: 42–45 cm, so the pendant sits just above the neckline, not on it.
  • V-neck: 45–50 cm, so the pendant follows the V and lands a little above its point.
  • Open shirt: 42–45 cm, in the opening between the collar.
  • Turtleneck: a long chain, 60 cm or more, worn over the knit.
  • Strapless or off-shoulder: 40 cm, close to the neck, to frame the shoulders.

What the extension chain is for

Many necklaces are sold as 42+7 cm or 45+5 cm: the first number is the chain, the second a short extension at the clasp. It lets one necklace do two jobs — on the collarbone with a T-shirt, a little lower with a V-neck.

It is also how you layer two necklaces of the same length: wear one at its shortest and the other fully extended, and they stop tangling.

How to find your length at home

  1. Take a piece of string or a phone charger cable.
  2. Wrap it around your neck and hold it where you want the pendant to sit.
  3. Lay it flat and measure it: that is your chain length.
  4. Compare with a necklace you already like — the easiest reference you have.
