How to Travel With Jewellery: Packing, Flights and Airport Security

· 1 min read

Jewellery gets lost on holiday in three places: the hotel bathroom, the bottom of a suitcase and the beach. The fix is to bring less, and to bring pieces you never need to take off.

Here is how to pack, fly and swim without losing anything.

How to Travel With Jewellery: Packing, Flights and Airport Security

Wear it, don’t pack it

The safest place for jewellery is on you. Pieces in waterproof steel can stay on for the flight, the shower, the pool and the sea, so they never sit on a sink. Bring a few you love rather than a pouch of options.

Airport security

  • Small jewellery rarely beeps: studs, fine chains and thin rings usually go through.
  • Chunky pieces and stacks can: put cuffs and heavy chains in the tray with your watch.
  • Always in your hand luggage, never in a checked suitcase.

Packing without tangles

  • Close every clasp before packing: a closed chain can’t thread itself through another.
  • One chain per pouch, or thread it through a straw and close the clasp outside it.
  • Rings and earrings in a pill box or a small hard case, not loose in a bag.

On the beach

Salt water, sun cream and sand don’t harm 316L steel, but sand scratches a polished surface over time. Rinse with fresh water in the evening. Rings slip off cold, wet fingers more easily: in the sea, keep the ones that fit snugly.

FAQ

Does jewellery set off airport metal detectors?

Small pieces rarely do. Chunky cuffs, heavy chains and large stacks can: put them in the tray before the scanner.

Should jewellery go in checked luggage?

No. Keep it on you or in your hand luggage, where you can see it.

Can I swim in the sea with steel jewellery?

Yes, 316L steel doesn’t mind salt water. Rinse with fresh water afterwards, and keep loose rings for dry land.

Bring less, wear it all, rinse it in the evening.
