Buying Guide
Black Friday Jewellery: What’s Worth Buying (and What Isn’t)
· 2 min read
Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November this year, and the jewellery “deals” start a week before. Some are real. Many are pieces that were never worth the crossed-out price, sold at what they were always worth.
Here is how to tell the difference, and what is worth buying whether it is on sale or not.

Check the metal before the discount
A ring at 70% off is no bargain if it is brass under a thin gold coat: it wears through in weeks and can turn your finger green. Look for the metal in the description, not the colour. Stainless steel 316L, sterling silver or solid gold are named; “gold tone”, “fashion metal” or nothing at all usually means brass or zinc alloy.
For gold colour, the finish matters as much as the metal: PVD gold is bonded to the steel and lasts years; classic electroplating on brass is a few microns that rub off.
Spot a fake “was” price
- Search the piece a month before: if it was “€89” for a single day, the reduction is the real price.
- In the EU, the “was” price must be the lowest of the last 30 days (the Omnibus rule). A shop showing something else is bending the rules.
- Check the returns: a deal you can’t send back if it pinches or tarnishes is a gamble.
What’s worth it at any price
Pieces you will wear every day: a ring you never take off, a chain that goes in the shower, small hoops you sleep in. Jewellery that survives water, sweat and sun cream costs less per wear than anything you keep in a drawer.
Statement pieces are the other good buy: a bold cocktail ring or a chunky chain is what you would hesitate over at full price, and what makes an outfit for years.
What to skip
- Sets of 20 rings for €15: they are plated brass, and they look it after a week.
- Anything without a material named, a return policy or an address you can write to.
- Gifts bought only because they were cheap: a voucher is better than a piece nobody will wear.
